What is film developing?

Film developing is the chemical process that turns the exposed images on your film into visible negatives (or positives, for slide film). After developing, most labs also offer scanning services so you can receive digital copies of your photographs.

The most common film processing types are:

  • C41 – Standard colour negative film (Kodak Gold, Ultramax, ColorPlus, Fujifilm 400, etc.)
  • Black & White – Traditional monochrome films such as Ilford HP5 Plus, Kentmere and Kodak Tri-X.
  • ECN-2 – Motion picture films such as Kodak Vision3 that have been adapted for still photography.
  • E6 – Colour slide (reversal) film such as Fujifilm Velvia and Provia.

Not every lab offers every processing type, so it's always worth checking before dropping off your film.
